Attorneys & Staff

Jonathan Cermele

Jon received his B.A. from Earlham College in 1984 and his J.D. from the University of Dayton School of Law in 1992. He has represented law enforcement officers exclusively for the last 10 years.

A member of the Wisconsin Bar Association, he has successfully argued cases before Wisconsin Circuit Courts, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals and the Wisconsin Supreme Court, as well as the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Jon has a broad range of experience in matters that arise on and off-the-job, with an emphasis on critical incidents (i.e. officer-involved shootings), personal injury (squad, motorcycle and off-duty accidents), civil litigation (including constitutional claims, wage claims and liberty interests), criminal investigations, disciplinary appeals, grievance arbitration and interest arbitration.

Brendan P. Matthews

Brendan received his B.A. from the University of Vermont and his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School. In law school, Brendan garnered "Best Oralist" honors as Moot Court Board member, interned with the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission ("WERC") and clerked for the highly-respected Madison law firm of Gingras, Cates & Luebke, S.C. Before joining Cermele & Associates, S.C.(now Cermele & Matthews, S.C.), Brendan worked for the Sheboygan County District Attorney's Office. In Sheboygan, he was awarded the Sheboygan Police Department's Citizen's Distinguished Service Award for "courageous acts of bravery to aid and assist law enforcement," as a result of rescuing a drowning girl in Lake Michigan during a police ride-along. Since joining the firm, Brendan has represented hundreds of law enforcement officers from across the state in various venues, ranging from administrative law judges to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Brendan's passion, coupled with his dedication to representing law enforcement officers, is without equal. He enjoys negotiating, the collective bargaining process and representing officers in criminal investigations (including officer-involved-shootings), disciplinary appeals, contractual grievances, worker's compensation appeals and general civil litigation.

Patrick McDonald

Cermele & Matthews, S.C., is pleased to announce the addition of Patrick McDonald as its new Associate legal counsel.

Patrick received his B.A. with honors in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, and earned his Juris Doctorate in 2018 from Marquette University Law School. While in law school, Patrick served as a member of the Marquette Sports Law Review and was recognized for his volunteer service with his induction into the Marquette University Law School’s Pro Bono Society. Patrick gained valuable legal experience clerking for firms in the Milwaukee area that focused on personal injury, criminal defense, bankruptcy, and public policy issues. Patrick also interned for now Wisconsin Supreme Court justice Rebecca F. Dallet. Patrick prides himself on his dedicated service, listening carefully to the needs and goals of clients and working to attain the best possible legal results.

Patrick’s practice with Cermele & Matthews, S.C., will focus on serving law enforcement associations and police officers in criminal investigations, disciplinary appeals, personal litigation and worker’s compensation.
